Status: 🔴 Board member of SEGM (Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine); pediatrician who has repeatedly filed resolutions challenging the American Academy of Pediatrics’ support for gender-affirming care
Dr. Julia W. Mason is an American pediatrician in private practice at Calcagno Pediatrics in Gresham, Oregon who has become a prominent figure in the anti-trans movement under the guise of “evidence-based medicine.” She is a board member of SEGM, a founding board member of the LGB Courage Coalition (alongside Jamie Reed), and a member of Genspect. She has repeatedly introduced resolutions at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Annual Leadership Forum challenging the organization’s stance on gender-affirming care, each time receiving minimal support from the organization’s 67,000+ members.[1] She has co-authored papers opposing gender-affirming care in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, and Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy.[2]
Mason has introduced three resolutions at the AAP Annual Leadership Forum demanding reevaluation of AAP’s stance on gender-affirming care:[1][2]
In August 2022, Mason co-authored a Wall Street Journal article with Manhattan Institute fellow Leor Sapir questioning the methodology of a study published in AAP’s journal Pediatrics that supported gender-affirming care.[3] AAP President Moira Szilagyi published a response defending the affirming care model, stating it “doesn’t push medical treatments or surgery” and clarifying that no European country has categorically banned gender-affirming care when medically necessary.[3]
Mason is a board member of SEGM, the anti-trans group founded by Irish conversion therapist Stella O’Malley.[4] When SEGM was denied a booth at the 2021 AAP National Conference, Mason wrote a letter protesting the decision.[2]
Mason is a founding board member of the LGB Courage Coalition, an anti-trans LGB separatist organization where Jamie Reed served as Executive Director and Co-Executive Director. The group rebranded from “LGBT Courage Coalition” after all trans members left in October 2024.[2]
Mason is a regular guest on anti-trans programs including The Megyn Kelly Show, Heterodorx (whose hosts use anti-trans slurs), Calmversations, and Genspect’s Gender: A Wider Lens podcast.[2] She has admitted to speaking regularly on background with New York Times reporter Azeen Ghorayshi, noting her views are considered too extreme to quote on the record.[5]
